Smaller coins saw bigger moves as investors continued to digest the implications of a second term for President-elect Donald Trump. The payments coin XRP surged 11%. The decentralized finance token tied to Cardano rocketed 40%. Memecoins dogecoin and Shiba Inu coin soared 17% and 31%, respectively.
Bitcoin’s price saw a 3% uptick, climbing to just shy of $30,000 in response to a plunge in global long-dated government bond yields. This fall in yields was triggered by China’s far weaker than anticipated trade numbers for July. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield tumbled below the 4% mark. These macroeconomic shifts have seemingly buoyed the crypto market, with other notable cryptocurrencies like Solana (SOL), Toncoin (TON), and Chainlink (LINK) registering gains of over 4% at the time of writing.
Bitcoin was deemed a safe asset regardless of the outcome of the election — it is not considered a security, even by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Trump has made big overtures about bitcoin like entertaining the idea of a strategic national bitcoin reserve and speaking about the need to keep all bitcoin mined in America.
Prominent figures in the crypto space, Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood and Galaxy Digital CEO Mike Novogratz, have expressed optimism regarding the approval of a spot bitcoin ETF by the SEC. Cryptocurrency exchange
Coinbase is a bit of a unique beast. It’s the de-facto standard for reputability, having great legal and security history, even going so far as to actively block transfers out to known scam addresses, just to help prevent you from burning yourself. Coinbase is also the primary entry point for the majority of institutional investors for this reason. On the other hand, their coin variety listing is quite bad, they don’t offer margin/options trading, and their trading fees are high for the market at 0.5%. That said, they offer free ACH bank transfers, no withdrawal fees, and their trading fee drops quickly for high volume traders.
Even the ‘Low Fee’ DeFi exchanges like Cake take 0.2% in fees ontop of the network fees, which would only put them in the middle of the pack for the centralized exchanges, with no fee-cuts for things like high volume trading.
OKEX is another primarily Asia-market exchange. They’re basically the little brother of Huobi in most respects. Fewer coins, fewer trading pairs, and more drama issues. The owner was recently arrested, which caused the exchange to lock all deposits/withdrawals for around a month. This is definitely one to pull your coins off of quickly if you do trade through it. They do however offer better rates than Huobi per-trade.
Upbit – Upbit is basically -the- exchange in South Korea, and largely unused elsewhere. It’s mostly notable in that its markets tends to move a bit unpredictably compared to the rest of the world at times.
China cryptocurrency

South Korea is progressing with regulation for crypto and other virtual assets after the Virtual Asset Users Protection Act was passed in 2023. The regulation creates stronger protections for users by adding requirements around record keeping and transparency.
Any company issuing or trading cryptocurrency will need a licence, and from January 2026 all service providers will have to obtain the name of senders and beneficiaries, whatever the amount being transferred. Further, any self-hosted wallets holding over 1,000 euros will need to undergo wallet ownership verification for transactions.
